In December, our team at Williams Glass and Company completed a large window and glass replacement project in Potomac, MD, helping a homeowner upgrade several fogged insulated windows and transoms with tempered Low-E insulated glass.

This was a major residential project involving large custom window openings in a high-end home. The goal was to improve clarity, energy efficiency, and overall aesthetics—without the need for full window frame replacement.

The result was a cleaner, more modern look and a noticeable improvement in comfort and efficiency throughout the home.

The Problem: Fogged Insulated Windows in a Luxury Home

Many homeowners in Potomac experience fogged or cloudy windows, especially in larger homes with older insulated glass units. This fogging happens when the seal inside the insulated glass fails, allowing moisture to build up between the panes.

Common issues include:

  • Fog or condensation trapped between the glass

  • Reduced natural light

  • Decreased energy efficiency

  • Dated appearance in otherwise beautiful spaces

In this home, multiple double-hung windows and transoms had failed insulated glass, impacting both the interior view and the home’s energy performance.

  • Exterior window glass removal using scaffolding during a large residential project in Potomac, MD.

The Solution: Tempered Low-E Insulated Glass Replacement

Instead of replacing entire window frames, we removed the failed insulated glass and installed custom-fit tempered Low-E insulated glass units.

This solution allowed the homeowner to:

  • Keep the existing window frames

  • Maintain the architectural integrity of the home

  • Upgrade performance without unnecessary demolition

What We Installed:

  • Tempered safety glass (ideal for large openings)

  • Low-E insulated glass for energy efficiency

  • Custom-sized units for oversized windows and transoms

Why Low-E Insulated Glass Is a Smart Upgrade

Low-E (low emissivity) glass is designed to reflect heat while allowing natural light to pass through. For Potomac homeowners, this means:

  • Improved insulation during winter months

  • Reduced heat gain during summer

  • Lower energy bills over time

  • Clearer, brighter views year-round

This upgrade is especially beneficial in homes with large window walls, where glass performance plays a major role in comfort and efficiency.

The Results: Cleaner Aesthetic & Better Energy Performance

After installation, the difference was immediately noticeable.

✔ Crystal-clear glass with no fogging

✔ A brighter, more modern interior look

✔ Improved energy efficiency

✔ Increased long-term value

This project is a great example of how professional glass replacement can dramatically improve a home—without the cost and disruption of full window replacement.
